Nubia was located to the south from Egypt (the border went across the 1st rapid of the Nile near the
modern-day Assuan). It was colonized in the ancient time, and since the beginning of the Middle
Kingdom Nubian warriors served in elite Egyptian military formations. The face of this Nubian Negro
with small sloping eyes, wide nose alae, raised cheekbones, a beard, and mustache is portrayed extremely
graphically and gives a very exact description of typical ethnic characteristic.
