Portrait of a Girl. 1898

Franz von Lenbach was a central figure in the artistic life of Munich at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1862-1868 he carried out a commission for Count Adolf Friedrich von Schack to make copies of canvases by Titian, Giorgione, Rubens and Velasquez and mastered the specific features of their painting. Stylised in the spirit of the Old Masters, this painting reflects one of the artist's interests and belongs to a series of costumed portraits of people taking part in the historical spectacles that were often held in Lenbach's villa.
