This work forms a pair with the painting Christ and the Sinful Woman held in the Prague National Gallery,
Repeated variants of this composition are to be found in the Suid collection in the USA and in a private collection in Bologna. The most famous picture from the Capodimonte Museum in Naples and the work paired with it Christ and the Sinful Woman date from 1762-1729. It is assumed that they served as sketches for the canvases in the Consul Smith's collection in Hampton Court outside London.
