While in the Tronshen collection and initially while in the Hermitage, this work was attributed to Annibale Carracci and his circle – later viewed as a work by Caravaggio and his circle. Various scholars have also suggested it was the work of Lionello Spada and Bartolomeo Cavarozzi. Eventually attributed be V.E. Markova to Salini.
