Picture, forming part of a pair with Inv. No. 262 (cat. № 5).

In the past this had been part of an altarpiece. The second episode, the Flagellation of Christ, before the procession to Golgotha, was to become far more widespread in Italian painting. In the inventory of M.S.Shchokin's collection both fragments are listed as "an example of fine Latin painting". V.N.Lazarev published them as typical examples of maniera greca created in Venice at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century.
