Usually cited as a variant of a composition in the Alte Pinakothek (Munich), although there is little basis for this, given that they were executed differently. The style of the picture in the Pushkin Museum shows that Palma Giovane had been influenced by the work of Jacopo Tintoretto and Jacopo Bassano; the depiction of the shepherds and animals in the foreground can be traced back to works by Bassano. A preliminary sketch for the picture in the Pushkin Museum was formerly held in the Rudolph collection (London).
