In 1917 Rockwell Kent set off for Alaska with his small son. They built a log cabin on Fox Island in Resurrection Bay where they spent several months. Alaska influenced not only Kent the traveller, but also Kent the writer. His first book Wilderness came out in 1920 illustrated by the author. Alongside painted and drawn landscapes full of dark symbolism, which arose as a result of this journey, there are also radiant, glittering views of the real Alaska, based on the contrast of snow-covered cliffs and graphic patterns of bare tree branches.
