The attribution to Guido Reni was established by V.E.Markova, Cesare Malvasia (1678) in a biography of the painter mentions a picture on copper with a depiction of St. Veronica, which was in the house of Senator Gessi in Bologna. The work had been painted "per devozione private" (for private devotions) and stemmed from the late period of the master's work.
