Initially this was part of a diptych. As has been established by F. Dzeri, the first panel with a depiction of the Crucifixion is in the Tessé Museum (Le Mans, France). It was transferred to the Pushkin Museum as a work by Lippo Vanni.

Provenance: till the beginning of the 20th century it was in the collection of Prince P.A.Golitsyn, then that of Kropotkin, from whom it was acquired in the early 1900s by D.I.Shchukin (Moscow); in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
