Madonna with Chalice. 1841

The representation of the Madonna goes back to Raphael's images. Ingres painted the picture in Rome as a commission for the heir to the Russian throne, the future Emperor Alexander II, who was visiting Italy, which explains why, in addition to St Nicholas (the patron saint of Alexander's father, Emperor Nicholas I) the figure of the Russian saint Alexander Nevsky is also included.
