Henri Matisse
Figurine and Vase on Oriental Carpet (Still Life in Venetian Red). 1908

Henri Matisse's still-life paintings of the second half of the 1900s are full of pictorial freedom and intense, almost burning colours. The objects in the magical space of the pictorial plane seem to form part of the ornament, the arabesque, as in oriental art which greatly interested Matisse. He included a plaster model of his sculpture Madeleine (bronze, 1901) in the composition.
