Maurice de Vlaminck
Barges on the Seine. 1905–1906

The landscape was painted at Nanterre where the artist's family was living at the time. Vlaminck's energetic brush with its large, broad strokes literally forces the waves to rock the small tugboat on the river. The work is thought to have been displayed at the master's first one-man show in the gallery of Ambroise Vollard, where it was acquired by the Moscow collector Ivan Morozov, one of the first appreciators of Fauvist art.
