The picture was painted in Normandy at Perros-Guirec, where Denis bought the villa Silencio. At the time the artist was working on a commission from Ivan Morozov to paint a series of decorative canvases for his mansion in Prechistenka, which included the present work. The symmetrically arranged figures of the shepherd and nude nymph in the serene epic landscape remind one of Greek statues and Paul Gauguin's compositions What? Are you jealous? (1892) and The Great Buddha (1899), both in the Pushkin Museum collection.
