The so-called Moroccan Triptych was compiled by the artist for the collector Ivan Morozov from pictures painted during a journey to North Africa. The figure shown in the central work is the Moroccan girl Zorah who worked at the Hotel Villa de France and often posed for Matisse in the spring and autumn of 1912. The artist's oriental impressions were turned into pictorial fabric that combines nature, artistic and architectural associations with the meditative reverie of an Arabic town and its inhabitants.
