Eugène Carrière
A Mother's Kiss. Late 1890-s

The picture was painted by the artist not long before his death. Carrière frequently incorporated images of his nearest and dearest in his paintings, always enveloping them in a mystical aura. The figure on the extreme left can be identified as the artist's wife, Sophie Eugenie Carrière, and the model in the middle resembles his daughter Marguerite. Carrière repeated this favourite subject in several canvases. The present work comes from the collection of the eldest Morozov brother, Mikhail, who bequeathed his whole collection to the city of Moscow.
