House in the Mountains. Circa 1874

The picture was painted in Switzerland where Courbet spent his last years (1874-1877), having fled France after the collapse of the Paris Commune. In spite of its small dimensions, the monumentality and austere structure are impressive. Rooted firmly in the ground, as it were, the building appears to be a product of the same mighty force that has fashioned the mountain tops. This impression is reinforced to no small extent by the colour range and broad, thickly applied strokes of the brush and palette knife.
