The picture belongs to a cycle of works painted by the artist under the impression of his journeys to Egypt, Palestine and Turkey. Mameluke was the term for soldiers from the private guard of the Arabic caliphs. During the reign of Napoleon a unit of mamelukes dressed in oriental costume was introduced into the imperial guard.
