Supper after the Masked Ball. Circa 1855

The picture belongs to an extensive series by Couture devoted to the traditional personages of the Italian commedia dell'arte, which was produced between 1854 and 1870. The characters on the canvas are modelled on some of the artist's close acquaintances. For example the figure of the reclining woman resembles the well-known Paris courtesan Alice Ozy, while that of Pierrot shows a portrait likeness to the painter of the picture. The place of the action is also recognisable as the fashionable restaurant of the Maison d'Or, frequented by the Goncourt brothers, Dumas-fils, Théophile Gautier and Couture himself.
