Daumier, Honoré
Washerwomen on the Steps. 1860-1862

Oil on canvas
Friedrich. Goya. Ingres. Delacroix View on the hall's virtual panorama

Living on the embankment of the Ile Saint-Louis and observing the hard work of the washerwomen who went down to the Seine each day with their heavy load of washing, Daumier executed a series of works on this theme. In this particular picture, as in other scenes of city life by Daumier, the plastic force of the generalised, monumental images and dignified restraint of the colour are most effective.
