This stylised foliate motif was a favourite of Vlaminck's in his faience painting. The powerful resilient branches with bright blossom and fruit twine sinuously round the body of the vase. The painting resembles a detail from a landscape composition. The drawing is dynamic and the colours are strikingly vivid. The system of freely arranged decor appears to have been borrowed from oriental ceramics and the resonant colours from Italian Renaissance majolica. In Vlaminck's work, however, traditional painting devices acquire a new, modern note.
