Carlo Carrà
Head of a Woman. 1915

Carlo Carrà was a striking exponent of Italian Futurism, who together with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Umberto Boccioni and Luigi Russolo signed the Manifesto of Futurist Painters in 1910. His Head collage produced a little later was a kind of manifesto of this trend. An important motif in the composition is the Futurist banner with the words "Bandiera futurista" and the Futurist motto "Marciare non marcire" ("March forward - to stop is death"). The theme of the newspaper cuttings in the collage is mainly war, which the Futurists saw as a way of "cleansing the world".
