Portrait of Admiral Contarini. Circa 1575

This terracotta bust of a bearded man in plate armour and paludamentum, a cape worn by military commanders in ancient Rome, was acquired for the museums of Berlin in Venice in 1841. The identity of the person being portrayed is unknown – the identification of the character with Admiral Contarini is only an assumption.
