One of the founders of the Association of the Wanderers ("Peredvizhniki"), Moscow painter V.G. Perov stood at the origins of new processes taken place in art of the 60s connected with the heyday of realistic painting. He was the author of the famous genre paintings and was known as a great portraitist. "Portrait of Lady in black" is of a particular interest. This is a characteristic image of imperious and strong-willed woman apparently originating from the merchant class. Her face was serious, almost harsh. In her facial expression and posture Perov skillfully managed to convey the inner dignity of the model. Restrained coloring and contrasts of light give the painting almost solemn character.
