Visually impaired visitors

Within the framework of the most important museum exhibitions, people with visual or hearing limitations are offered tactile exhibit models, educational programs as well as topical master classes for a permanent exposition. Tactile models are provided with Braille tags.

An inclusive program to the exhibition “Shchukin. Biography of a Collection” is organized as part of the Accessible Museum Project. It includes tours in Russian Sign Language, tactile displays for blind and visually impaired people and Digital Guides on the museum website and IZI.travel platform. The exhibition encompasses tactile models based on masterpieces, such as Dance by Henri Matisse, White Water Lilies by Claude Monet, Blue Dancers by Edgar Degas, House in a Garden (House and Trees) by Pablo Picasso, Pierrot and Harlequin by Paul Cezanne. The models are provided with Braille tags and audio guides with audio descriptive commentary.

Two opening lectures for blind and partially sighted visitors will be presented as part of the inclusive program. Natalia Kortunova, 19th and 20th Century European and American Art Gallery Assistant will elaborate on the history of the famous collection in the course of “Sergei Shchukin’s Collection” session. Using the example of artwork collected by Sergei Shchukin, members of the group will review and discuss outstanding masterpieces, paintings by impressionists, post-impressionists and modernists, such as Breakfast on the Grass, White Water Lilies by Claude Monet; Are You Jealous? by Paul Gauguin; Jaguar Attacking a Horse, The Poet and His Muse by Henri Rousseau, as well as Old Jew and a Boy, House in a Garden (House and Trees) by Pablo Picasso.

The lecture “Life and Work of Pablo Picasso” will help you follow the changes in artistic style of the great Spanish painter. Using tactile models based on the painter’s works, such as Old Jew, Girl on the Ball, House in a Garden, Portrait of Olga in an Armchair (Montrouge, spring 1918), Maternity (Fontainebleau, July 25, 1921) and Large Nude in Red Armchair (Paris, May 5, 1929), the course participants will get acquainted with various periods of Picasso’s art: Blue Period, Rose Period, and Cubism.

Tours for individual visitors and groups are conducted by appointment only on working days and opening hours of the museum Main Building. Entrance for visitors with disability (first and second degree) and one escort is free. It is permitted to visit the museum with a guide dog subject to availability of a document confirming the dog’s special training. Also, the dog shall be muzzled and wear a special guide-dog harness with “working dog” signs and reflective edges.
